TEENAGE fiction was celebrated at a Lancing school as pupils eagerly awaited the results of the Carnegie Award 2009.
Fifteen readers from years seven to 10 at Boundstone Community College met for six weeks to read and discuss the shortlist before the national winner was announced during a literary lunch at the school.
Bog Child, by Siobhan Dowd, came out on top nationally, but the school's favourite book was Ostrich Boys by Keith Gray.
"It was good to see the interest in reading generated by the award and the short-list reflected the wide range of genres out there in new teenage fiction for our pupils to get stuck into," said senior librarian Sue Waton.
"As each week went by, we became more knowledgeable and talked about themes, characters and plot lines.
"Many of our readers found that they were encountering stories they wouldn't normally have chosen to read, but really enjoyed.
"The whole process has been an exploration and a journey.
"All in all, a superb experience."
