EIGHT fire crews rushed to a large fire in a vehicle repair workshop last night (Monday April 7).
The first crew to arrive from Steyning found flames shooting through the roof of a workshop near the old cement works off the A283 Steyning Road near Upper Beeding shortly after 9.15am.

Due to the risk of cylinders being involved in the fire the crews had to fight the blaze defensively using water from ground monitors to create a water curtain.

Further appliances were requested including two water carriers to enable a supply of water for the ground monitors.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time, although the possibility of it starting accidentally during welding operations has not been ruled out.

Relief crews were in attendance overnight to cool the cylinders and will make a further assessment at daybreak.
